Steyn Capital Management is an award-winning investment manager, currently managing approximately R12 billion in assets. The company was formed in 2009 and is located in Cape Town. The company’s investment team manages long / short and long-only equity portfolios investing across South Africa, Pan-Africa and global emerging and frontier markets.
All the company’s investment strategies are managed with the same value-orientated philosophy and research-intensive methodology. The investment research process is focused on fundamental analysis, requiring the investment team to have strong financial analysis and forensic accounting skills.
Steyn Capital Management would like to invite individuals with an interest in pursuing a career in the investment industry, to apply for a Graduate Trainee Analyst position. The position is an initial one year rotation through the investing, trading and operations facets of our business. High performing trainees will be offered permanent positions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The position may include the following tasks, among others;-
- Interviewing company management to understand how they operate their business and how they will allocate capital in the future;
- Performing industry and competitor case studies to answer business and research questions;
- Sourcing and interviewing customers, competitors and suppliers on a global basis to triangulate current and future competitive conditions;
- Searching for local and global competitors, establishing relationships where possible;
- Performing a search of all articles ever written about a business, and distilling the important facts for the team, highlighting competitive advantages and risks;
- Researching management’s history to gauge their track record;
- Having conversations with sell side analysts and brokers, as well as competitors to determine the reasons for possible undervaluation or overvaluation of a stock;
- Investigating, researching and opining on any ESG issues;
- Reading annual reports to check management statements for consistency, considering the impact of language changes in future forecasts and guidance;
- Investigating management incentives, alignment and share trading;
- Writing letters to management, company boards and other investors where appropriate to express Governance, Social and Environmental differences and influence change;
- Prepare attribution analyses for client reporting, responding to client queries
- Assist with and prepare due diligence reports for clients
- Performing daily internal NAV calculations, resolving any exceptions with the prime broker/administrators and elevating any remaining issues to the team
- Prepare risk reports for weekly risk & portfolio meetings, suggesting improvements as required and highlighting risk areas for corrective action
- Monitor stock borrow availability and rates to identify short squeeze risk and reduce borrowing costs
- Ensure internal NAV records reflect dividend accruals timeously, and that analysts are informed of upcoming AGMs, liaise with them on voting choices, instruct voting via custodians and maintain records of voting decisions
- Further develop risk management tools, strategies and reporting
- Assist with implementing best practice improvements in trading, order flow and risk management
- Research & open trading in new markets, and negotiating best prices and execution
- Be involved in compliance & regulatory affairs
- Scrutinising risk reports and attending weekly risk & portfolio meetings, suggesting improvements as required and highlighting risk areas for corrective action;
- Potentially assisting execution Trader and Operations team
- Monitoring newsflow from brokers, stock exchanges, Bloomberg, newspapers, reacting timeously to information and disseminating relevant items to analyst team;
- Further developing risk management tools, strategies and reporting;
- Assisting with implementing best practice improvements;
- Potentially assisting with the company’s marketing initiatives.

Remuneration for the position includes a market related base salary, as well as a performance-based bonus.
