NUM general secretary Kolekile David Sipunzi passes away

National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) general secretary Kolekile David Sipunzi has passed on Christmas Day.

In a statement issued by NUM, Spunzi passed away around 11:00 on Friday, and the cause of his death was unknown at that stage. NUM deputy general secretary William Mabapa said Sipunzi’s clan did confirm his death to the organisation.

David Sipunzi begun his enticing career in mining industry, working for Harmony Gold, in 1985, the same year he joined NUM. Because of his hard working and determination, he climbed the ladder of the ranks, and in 1999 he was designated NUM Free State regional secretary capacity, continuing his dedication until he was elected NUM general secretary in 2015.

NUM said, “Comrade Sipunzi dedicated his entire life to the service of the mine, construction and energy workers in South Africa until his untimely death. He was a firm believer in the rights of the downtrodden and the voice of the voiceless.”

He would be remembered for his continuous cushion and devotion to fight for workers’ rights.

“He was a trade unionist who did not cease to fight for the rights of the NUM members. His global contribution as one of the Vice Presidents of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and his efforts in labour rights will not easily be forgotten

South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) expressed its sadness of bereavement over Sipunzi’s untimely death.

“Cde Sipunzi demonstrated over the years his unequivocal commitment to serve not just the workers in the mining sector, but organised and non-organised labour in its entirely given the peculiar socio-economic circumstances we are faced with as a country,” SADTU inserted in a statement on Friday.

The union said it was a privilege having to interact with Sipunzi during his years of trade union activism.

“We believe he has left valuable lessons for us about commitment to a [cause] and most importantly, the significance of unity of all affiliates of the federation,” the union added.

Thabo Mbeki Foundation referred to David Sipunzi as a “self-effacing and principal being,” they convey their “deepest condolences to Sipunzi’s clan and NUM.
