Limpopo mine disturbed by protesters who are demanding jobs

Protesters in Phalaborwa, Limpopo disrupted the operation of Foskor mine. This happened on Wednesday as the community members were outside protesting, demanding jobs.

This got the Phalaborwa Community Forum (PCF) members infuriated as they started the protest, they didn’t allow workers to enter or exit the mine.

PCF secretary Given Risenga told Sowetan LIVE that, they contracted company, Advent Oil, didn’t make formal introduction to the communities in and around Phalaborwa, failing to employ locals.

“Advent Oil comes all the way from Gauteng with their own employees to come work our land, while hundreds of local community members are unemployed and live in poverty,” Risenga said.

Risinga said there would be a meeting, set by Foskor, between Advent Oil and PCF on Friday, though the protest will continue will continue, allowing no one in and out of Foskor gates, until their demands are fully met.

Foskor spokesperson Hulisani Nemaxwi confirmed that there would be a meeting between the two parties this Friday.

“Production was low today due to the protest and there were some criminal disruptions, but the situation is calmer now,” Nemaxwi said.
