SADTU heads to court to challenge DBE’s decision for the rewriting of two NSC leaked papers

Jane Furse – Teacher’s union heads to court to reserve the decision made by the Minister of Education Angie Motshekga on Friday.

South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) General Secretary Mugwena Maluleke told media on Friday that. they are not happy with the decision made by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) with the examination regulatory body Umalusi, to have Grade 12 Pupils rewriting two National Senior Certificate (NSC) papers – Mathematics P2 and Physical Sciences P2, nationally so!

SADTU said the number of learners who cheated doesn’t warrantee a national rewriting of the papers as those cheated can be easily spotted in the marking process, as a result the union is going to court for a court interdict reversing the decision.

Eyewiteness News took to YouTube of the announcement made by Motshekga, saying it would be the first time for NSC pupils to rewrite examination nationally, in the history of South Africa.

SADTU’s Nomusa Cembi told the media that, they are taking the matter to court because the decision made by DBE is unjust and premature.

“We will be applying for an urgent court interdict on the decision of the department to make all learners rewrite these two papers. We feel like this decision is unfair and premature,’ said Cembi.

Congress of South African Students (COSAS) called upon the pupils, saying they must not rewriter Maths and Science exams following the leak.

Despite the attempt of the unions to have the Department of Basic Education to change its decision, the spokesperson thereof, Elijah Mahlangu said they are ready to challenge the unions in court.

“Those that have announced that they will take the department to court, we will wait for them and see what happens,” said Mahlangu.

DBE announced that Maathematics Paper 2 will be written on the 15th of December and Physical Science 2 days latter.

Will see if the Teacher’s unions succeed with the issuing of court interact to revert the department’s decision.
