NLA is in need of a candidate attorney who would live our core values while learning how to be the best attorney they could possibly be. We need someone who demonstrates a great work ethic, critical thinking, initiative and can work in a team.

NLA Legal Inc (“NLA”) is a small, but dynamic, attorneys’ firm in Douglasdale, Johannesburg, specialising in commercial and corporate law, commercial litigation and family law. Principal Objective of the Position:
- To provide support and assistance to more senior attorneys in the firm, especially in respect
of litigation and family law matters - To build relationships with existing and prospective clients with a view to building an independent practice
- To draft correspondence, pleadings and agreements
- To meet with clients, counsel, colleagues, expert witnesses and other persons in relation to any particular matter
- To ensure that matters run smoothly, deadlines are met timeously and obligations to clients, colleagues and the courts are met
- To appear in a variety of hearings in the Magistrate Courts;
- To make representations at other institutions eg: the Master’s office, the Deeds Office, Municipal offices
- To contribute to NLA’s desire to utilize technology to better its practice and its offering to its clients
Key Performance Areas, Activities and Indicators:
Support and assistance to more senior attorneys
- follow instructions given by more senior attorneys, and timeously, diligently and competently attend to instructions given
- draft correspondence, pleadings and agreements
- attend meetings as required
- ensure that matters run smoothly, deadlines are met timeously and obligations to clients, colleagues and the courts are met
- appear in a variety of hearings in the Magistrate Courts
- make representations at other institutions eg: the Master’s office, the Deeds Office, Municipal offices
- pay attention to detail at all times
- go above and beyond what is expected
Build an independent practice
- build relationships with existing and prospective clients with a view to building an independent practice
- take on learnings and training so as to improve abilities to practice as an attorney
Contribute to the technological growth of NLA
- understand technology already in use at NLA
- be open to trying new technology
- make recommendations and/or present ideas to the Board on new technology available in the market and how to use it to benefit NLA and its clients
Reporting
- report progress on various instructions given, to the responsible senior attorney timeously and in real time
- keep clients updated on their matters at all times
- provide progress reports to clients as per their particular requirements
Documents and Record-keeping
- ensure that all matter files are kept up to date at all times – physically and electronically
- ensure records of all work done on every matter is accurate and updated daily
- ensure time-keeping is accurate, and captured daily
Role Requirements, Qualification and Experience:
- LLB degree
- Completion of Practical Legal Training (PLT) is not a requirement
- No previous experience in the legal industry is required, but some indication that the candidate has done vacation work or volunteer work in the legal space will be advantageous to the candidate (if such work can be confirmed independently)
- Valid light vehicle driver’s license is preferable, but is not required
- Fluent in English – both verbal and written. Written fluency in another official South African language is not a requirement, but the ability to speak and understand such language will be advantageous to the candidate

- Existing and prospective clients
- Senior and Junior Counsel
- Court officials, staff members at other institutions like the Master’s office, Deeds Office, Municipal Offices
- Other members of the legal profession, including senior and junior attorneys
Other Information:
- Only applicants who meet the above requirements will be eligible for consideration
- Preference will be given to South African citizens, but non-South African citizens with the correct qualifications and permanent residence or a valid South African work permit will be considered
- The appointment will be made by the directors of NLA, and NLA reserves the right not to fill the position
NLA will not be liable for interview travel costs or relocation costs - An application will not in itself entitle the applicant to an interview, and in this regard, only short-listed applicants will be contacted for an interview.
