Job Advert Summary
Reporting to the GIS Manager, the GIS Technician will provide Corporate Geographical Information System consulting and oversight for GIS projects. The GIS Technician is responsible for data management and capturing and providing supportive mapping data and analysis on request.
Primary Duties:
- Duties include reading and interpreting source documents, such as civil engineering plans and plot maps and entering required data into the GIS system.
- Capturing new and editing existing graphical and tabular data.
- Performing geographical analysis.
- Interfaces directly with clients to determine their needs.
- Spatial data management and analysis.
- Provide GIS services.
- Digitize information and create, maintain, update and views GIS data.
- Undertakes and executes GIS projects that is allocated.
- Updates and maintains spatial asset register.
- Knowledge of GIS standards.
- Apply GIS software functions.
- Cartographic and mapping principles.
- Geographical projections and conversions.
- Spatial data analysis.
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of a National Diploma in;-
- GIS,
- Geography,
- Engineering,
- Or a closely related field
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and / or experience
- Professional Registration with SAGC as a GISc Technician/In Training
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in GIS technical field
Knowledge:
- South African Cadastral System (LO/WG).
- Geographical Projections and conversions.
- GIS (ESRI & ArcMap) and CAD software.
- Land Survey Act 8 of 1997.
- Legislative skills – SDI Act, Promotion to Access to Information Act, Copyright Act, SA Geographical names Council Act.
- Global Positioning Systems (theoretical & practical).
- GIS capabilities and technologies.
- Principles of database structure and design.
- Cartographic and Mapping Principles.
