Business Need/Purpose of Role:
Weir HBF is contributing towards skills development in South Africa, by providing an opportunity to graduates to enter a two-year graduate program in the field of Metallurgical Engineering. The opportunity is available at our Port Elizabeth branch, Heavy Bay Foundry (HBF)
Key Tasks:
Including but not limited to:
- Ensure best optimal recipes are followed for chemical analysis within specification from first sample within budget
- Ensure best optimal recipes are followed for the required mechanical properties within budget
- View pouring practices and tie back to products to ensure high quality standard products
- Ensure the raw material used are best for the material grade applications
- Ensure the alloys used are best for the material grade applications
- View samples for spectrographic analysis to ensure the quality process have not gaps
- View samples for microscopic analysis to ensure recipes, raw material and alloys are favorable for the quality of the products
- Work closely with the melting team to uphold the metallurgical aspects
- Work closely with the Technical department to uphold the metallurgical aspects
- Work closely with the sand lab Technician to obtain high quality sand for moulding to achieve a sound quality product
- Be part of the reline of the furnaces to view lining wear and recommend improvements where and when needed
- Write monthly reports
- Be able to explain the metallurgy concepts in an understandable format
- Create and update standard operating procedures (SOP)
Requirements:
- Matric (Grade 12) certificate
- Metallurgical Engineering Degree
Minimum Skills/Abilities:
- Computer Literate – MS Office Suite
- Good oral and written business communication at all levels
- Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner
- Ability to plan and prioritise work activities
- Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness
