Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

A vacancy for an Intern has become available in our Durban office. The suitable candidate will be based in Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal with some work from home flexibility. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the above-mentioned vacancy. The successful candidate will report to the Climate Change and Environmental Team Lead and Discipline Partner.
Description:
The purpose of the job:
- The position will include mentoring through the SRK internship program to develop Climate Change related skills.
- The position will include extensive data analytics to inform the development of site-specific climate change models and the identification of associated risks.
- Skills development will also include the development of Greenhouse Gas emissions inventories.
- To support the role of a BSc Hons. Degree with majors in either Chemistry, Geophysics, Meteorology including Agrometeorology or Atmospheric Sciences and experience in programming in R or Python is required.
- The key to this role is that the candidate must have an interest in growing a career in atmospheric sciences specifically the management of climate change.
- Chemical Engineering graduates will be considered but the position is intended to result in professional registration as a Natural Scientist and not as an Engineer.
- The candidate must be locally based in KwaZulu-Natal
Experience and Skills:
The candidate must have the following:
- BSc Hons. Degree with majors in one or more of the following Chemistry, Geophysics, Meteorology including Agrometeorology or Atmospheric Sciences. Other modules advantageous to the internship comprise GIS, statistics, or mathematics. A Masters’ degree in any of the above would also be advantageous.
- Experience during tertiary education managing large and or multiple databases using coding in either Python or R.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and organisational skills with an aptitude for report writing to be developed during the internship.
- Have a sound knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. Experience with Esri ArcGIS and data analysis such as Power BI would be advantageous.
- Be meticulous in planning, schedule management, data collection / capture and management of multiple databases under supervision.
- Self-driven detail orientated individual that takes initiative and is interested in developing new approaches and tools.
- Able to work within tight deadlines and on multiple projects.
- Able to perform tasks independently after receiving instruction and identify potential solutions should issues arise.
- Willingness to travel locally and internationally including working outside of business hours when required.
- Have a valid Code 8 driver’s license and own transport.
The intern will gain exposure and practical work experience in the following areas:
- Development of GHG emission inventories and site-specific climate change models under supervision.
- Compilation under supervision of Monitoring Reports, Climate Change Impact Assessments and
- Climate Change Management Plans.
- Critical evaluation, analysis and identification in information (data) supplied.
- Shadowing senior staff in client liaison and following up as required.
