Globally, conservation and environmental policy is changing rapidly in response to the climate and biodiversity crises, with this change bringing about a significant increase in tensions at both domestic and transnational levels. Two broad positions are emerging for reform of conservation policy – one which seeks to make international conservation more responsible to the rights and livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC), and in contrast, substantial effort directed towards more traditional models such as 30×30 that lie in conflict with IPLC focused conservation efforts. For the most part, the willingness to reform and increased attention on conservation in the political agenda is a positive force. However, some agendas currently being pursued by western policy makers and animal rights groups could be extremely damaging to conservation efforts in the global south. Jamma and our partners are strongly committed to preserving the principles of sustainable use of natural resources and the rights of people living alongside wildlife to choose how best to manage and utilise it sustainably.
Policies and international regulations that seek to prohibit sustainable use are quickly gaining traction, increased media attention and growing political support. These policies will negatively impact some of the poorest and most vulnerable people who rely on the sustainable use of resources to survive. Not only are these communities suffering the worst impacts of climate change, but they remain marginalised from conservation and environmental policy decisions that directly affect them. Through our projects, communications output, and social media presence, Jamma is seeking to change this.
An exciting internship opportunity has been created to support existing projects by providing legal assistance and research input. This role will suit someone used to working both autonomously and within a small team. They will work closely with the Head of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Resource Rights.
Scope of Work and Objectives:
The purpose of this position will be to;-
- Engage in legal research to support ongoing projects around the topics of conservation, protection, and sustainable utilisation of natural resources.
- Identify legal mechanisms that Jamma can use to promote its vision.
- Assist in the review and analysis of legal documents, contracts, agreements, and other legal materials.
- Participate in the drafting of legal documents, including contracts, memoranda, pleadings, and correspondence.
- Collaborating with team members to ensure accuracy and clarity.
- Engage in legal analysis by examining complex issues and providing concise summaries and recommendations based on applicable laws, at both the national and international levels.
- Assist in administrative tasks related to legal proceedings, such as organising case files, maintaining databases, and managing schedules.
- Collaborate with the immediate and wider Jamma team to develop diverse legal empowerment strategies for Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM), with a primary focus on strengthening the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities around their natural resources.
- Assist the Head of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Resource Rights, Project Development Manager, Project Coordinator, and the Director of Conservation and Communities as required.
- Assist with technical expertise and inputs where needed.
- Other duties in line with the background and description of this position.
The incumbent should be ready to think outside the box before implementing readymade solutions. They should work within the specific local context, avoid imposing solutions simply because they may have worked elsewhere and be prepared to create something bespoke if the situation requires it. All with the end goal of working towards Jamma’s vision of success measured as the wellbeing of the planet and its people.
Qualifications and Skills Essential:
- Law Degree from a southern African country. Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the environment and/or indigenous people and local communities is a bonus.
- Excellent communication, organisational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrable research skills.
- Able to define tasks and meet set deadlines.
- Proficiency in legal research tools and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the Jamma team and Jamma’s wider network.
- Good administrative and IT skills.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Goal oriented and able to meet targets and objectives.
- A passion for and commitment to Jamma values.
- A firm commitment to the concept of sustainable utilization in all its forms as a useful and necessary tool for biodiversity conservation.
