Disaster Management Intern
Under the supervision of the IFRC Southern Africa Senior DM Officer, the DM intern will support in ensuring timely, effective and efficient support of disaster risk management activities for National Societies. He/she will support in building national disaster response and preparedness capacities to enable them to improve their disaster management programming and be an advocate for IFRC’s Preparedness for Effective Response approach.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The DM intern will be working on three main objectives;-
- Support in increasing preparedness for effective response (through PER or the Red Ready approach), working with NHQ and Branches to build response capacity prior to disasters, including contingency planning and EWS, forming Rapid Response Teams, Stock Prepositioning, and supply chains;
- Support NS to design long-term resilience building programme including Food security and livelihoods.
- Support profiling of programmes through meetings participation and monthly newsletters
Duties include;-
- Provide support ensuring the resilience approach is integrated across all NS programming areas.
- Promote knowledge sharing and best practices among Red Cross Movement Partners.
- Provide support in ensuring the quality and timely planning, implementation and reporting of the IFRC support to the NS for the emergency operations.
- Support in ensuring effective monitoring of emergency operations serving as link with the PMER officer in Pretoria.
- Provide support by working closely with the NS team to ensure timely and accurate financial and narrative reports are prepared and are in line with requirements specified in the project agreement or standard Federation reporting guidelines.
- Perform any other duties as requested by the Supervisor.
Requirements:
- Advanced university degree in;-
- Development / Social Studies,
- Project Management,
- Disaster Management
- or other relevant field. (Required)
- Professional training in disaster risk management. (Required)
Experience:
- Relevant experience in the field of disaster risk management. (Required)
- Working experience for a humanitarian aid organisation. (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills and Language:
- Self-supporting in computers (word processing, spreadsheets, internet and web-based searching etc.). (Required)
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills. (Required)
- Strong and highly developed technical skills in disaster risk management international practices. (Required)
- Project management and reporting skills. (Required)
- Fluently spoken and written English. (Required)
- Good command of another IFRC official language (French, Spanish or Arabic). ( Preferred)
