Internship: Solar Photovoltaics

The CSIR has an internship opportunity for recent graduate in the Energy Centre. The internship is designed to provide students with experience and understanding of research and development and the implementation thereof in projects. The programme is spread across various fields, with a strong focus in science, engineering, technology and mathematics. Technical work would involve the detailed planning and execution of experimental work under supervision in the area of Photovoltaic Technology. These opportunities are based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan and execute experiments under supervision;
  • In-depth analysis and objective interpretation of data under supervision;
  • Contribute to writing reports and manuscripts;
  • Contribute to presenting data in a poster format or orally;
  • Operational responsibilities including, infrastructure, equipment, and SHE;
  • Be responsible to develop a cross-cutting approach to model energy costs across different energy sectors, including energy efficiency (i.e., costs of not consuming a certain amount of energy).

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • A National Diploma in Science or Engineering at NQF level 6;
  • Studying towards a postgraduate at NQF level 8;
  • Experience in basic laboratory techniques in semiconductor technology, electronics, product development, product testing or associated fields will be an advantage;
  • Good demonstration and in-depth understanding of theory, with the ability to apply knowledge into practical;
    A strong work ethic and the ability to work under supervision within a dynamic team environment;
  • Must be innovative, have sound technical knowledge, integrity and lateral thinking ability;
  • Knowledge and appreciation of a cross-disciplinary project team environment;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to contribute across the boundaries imposed by classical scientific disciplines.




Internship: Energy Efficiency and Demand Response Engineer

The CSIR has an internship opportunity for an Energy Efficiency and Demand Response research in the Energy Supply and Demand Research Group. The main objective of the position is to support the formulation and implementation of Energy Efficiency and Demand research projects such as the determination of the energy intensity of different economic sectors, development and testing of Energy Efficiency and Demand Shaping solutions and assessment of energy demand along all end-use sectors. Assess and understand regulatory, technical, and market issues relevant to the adoption and implementation of Energy Efficiency and Demand Shaping solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the leadership of the Principal and Senior Researchers, contribute to research activities in the group, which include: breaking down problem statements and proposing research designs
  • Assist with the compilation of technical proposals and reports;
  • Assist with project administration and organisation; and
  • Liaise with clients, engage with stakeholders, and consult role-players where necessary.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • An Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering or any other related engineering qualification.
  • A Master‘s Degree in these fields will be an advantage.
  • No experience is required other than having a keen interest and skills in understanding principles of energy use, energy efficiency technologies and practices.
  • An interest in energy policies and technologies.
