Sasol Mainstream bursaries is a performance-based programme with a work-back / pay-back obligation.

This is an all-inclusive bursary offered to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate / postgraduate degree, to pursue selected Engineering, Science and Technology qualification for applicants nationally.

To be considered, you must be a South African citizen, currently registered or qualifying for possible registration at an approved South-African University orUniversity of Technology for the following year.

Fields of Study:

Applications may be submitted for degrees (no diplomas) in one of the following fields of study:

Undergraduate Studies (B.Eng. / B.Sc.) 

  1. Chemical Engineering
  2. Chemistry (Hons. is a requirement for Sasol)
  3. Civil Engineering
  4. Data Science (Computer Science / Mathematics / Operations Research / Statistics)
  5. Electrical Engineering
  6. Electronic Engineering
  7. Geology (Hons. is a requirement for Sasol)
  8. Industrial Engineering
  9. Mechanical Engineering
  10. Metallurgy (Hons. is a requirement for Sasol)
  11. Mining Engineering

Undergraduate Studies (B. Eng. Tech.) – University of Technology

Postgraduate (M.Sc. / M.Eng. / PhD.)

To support economic growth demands in South Africa and to satisfy our own requirements for highly skilled postgraduate in the science and engineering disciplines.  Sasol, in general, awards postgraduate bursaries for M.Sc., M.Eng. and PhD. studies in Engineering.

How Do I Qualify?

To be considered for the Sasol Mainstream Undergraduate bursary, the applicant must meet the following minimum criteria:

  1. Must be a South African Citizen
  2. Registered or qualifying for possible registration at an approved South-African University or University of Technology for the following year
  3. Bursary offered to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate / postgraduate degree, to pursue selected Engineering, Science and Technology qualification for applicants nationally.

Application Criteria (Undergraduates)

Undergraduate and University of Technology needs

Minimum requirements: Grade 12 (Current Grade 12 students will apply with Grade 11 results)

Bursaries can be accessed by those in matric or those who have completed matric but have not started with their first year of the studies.

B.Eng. and B.Sc.

  • Level 6:  70 -79% for Mathematics and
  • Level 6:  70 -79% for Physical Science and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English home language or
  • Level 4:  50 – 59% for English Second Additional language

B.Eng. Tech Engineering (Mine Surveying) 

  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for Mathematics and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for Physical Science and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English home language or
  • Level 4:  50 – 59% for English Second Additional language

General application criteria for students currently studying at university:

  1. Current 1st year students will apply with Grade 12 results.
  2. Current 2nd year students applying for third year will apply with 1st year results.
  3. Current 3rd year students applying for 4th year / Hons, will apply with 2nd year results.
  4. Hons. students applying for Masters, will apply with 3rd year results.
  5. Master students applying for PhD, will apply with Hons. results.
  6. Undergraduate students and Hons students must get 50% and above to meet minimum criteria.

Application criteria for current university undergraduate students 

(Academic year 1, 2, 3, 4 and Hons)

  1. A Minimum of 50% must be obtained for all courses which the student has registered for in the previous academic year.
  2. If a student is already studying towards the degree course for which he/she is applying for a bursary, the student must be registered for the degree course over the minimum study period for the degree involved (i.e. 4 years for engineering degree) and/or able to still complete studies in that minimum period of time.
  3. Students who are already on an extended study period or already added a year to the minimum study period (i.e. 5 years for an engineering degree) as well as individuals who are planning to register for an extended degree course, must not apply.
  4. Applications must be for full time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited and approved South African University.
  5. Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) will not be considered/allowed.
  6. No bursaries are awarded for studies at a University of Technology, except for studies in Mine Surveying.

Current university postgraduate students – (applying for Masters / PhD)

  1. A Minimum of 65% must be obtained for all courses which the student has registered for in the previous academic year.

To be considered for the Sasol Foundation bursary, the applicant must meet the following minimum criteria:

  1. Be a South African Citizen.
  2. Must have acceptance or provisional acceptance for studies at a South African University or University of Technology for the upcoming year.
  3. Combined Household Income must be less than 600 000 per annum
  4. Must have obtained a minimum of 50% in all subjects.
  5. Non-STEM bursaries are reserved only for qualifying Children of Sasol Employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo Shareholders or Candidates from Sasol Fence-line communities.

NB:

  1. The final selection will prioritise financially needy and academically competitive candidates.
  2. Selected individuals must be willing to go through and Interviews as well as psychometric assessments.
  3. Please note that applicants who are in Grade 12 this year, must submit the Grade 11 final results.
  4. All other applicants may submit end of year results whichever year they have completed Grade 12.
  5. Applicants who were enrolled at a Higher Learning Institution may use their end of year results to apply.

  • Select Register
  • Fill in the required details
  • Click on – Create New Account
  • You will receive an activation email, click on Activate Account
  • It will lead you to screen to verify your email and to create a password
  • Upon creation, you will be back on the login page
  • Enter your email and password
  • You have logged in
  • Click on South African Bursary Application (Top Left Corner)
  • Click on Undergraduate Applications
  • Supply required information
  • Read the disclaimer
  • Accept the disclaimer to proceed by clicking on the white button turning it blue
  • You can exit the page once you receive a response on your application (which will also be emailed to you)

Previously Registered

  • Click on Login
  • Supply login information
  • The form will take you to the section you have not completed

Forgot Password

  • Click on Request New Password
  • Supply email address you registered with
  • A password reset will be mailed to original registered email address
  • Once you receive your password via email, continue with login process

General Notes

  • Make sure to fill in required sections.
  • Each completed section will have a blue mark on the navigation at the top.
  • The Save and Continue button allocated at the bottom of each section enables you to save your data. Click on this button before you exit or continue to the next section.
  • If a section is incomplete and you click Submit, the page will give you error messages.
