Businesses in Braamfontein tighten security as the national universities shutdown continue

Johannesburg – The South Africa’s universities shutdown is affecting businesses in Braamfontein as business owners fasten security as a precautionary measure to shun vandalism, as the protest enters day two.

Students in Johannesburg are seen burning tyres, the ongoing protest is allegedly fueled by the police killing of civilian Mthokozisi Mtumba.

“Noswal Hall Residence, Bertha and Jorissen intersection, Empire Road and Myclinic Medical Centre on De Beer street where Mtumba lost his life have been marked as hotspots in Braamfontein,” Independent Online reports.

The protest follows non-registration of students due to historical debts.

As universities across the country join the protest, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) SRC said they won’t join the protest as the university’s left behind with academic calender.

TUT’s still writing November/December examinations for the academic year 2020,which makes it difficult for students representative council to join the protest,it’s almost mid-June 2021,the university’s yet to start the academic year thereof.

Witwatersrand University (Wits) and University of Johannesburg (UJ) started the protest last week, SABC News reported yesterday. Today some universities joined Wits University and UJ.

A small number of protesters from the University of Free State (UFS) and the North West University (NWU), Mahikeng campus, gathered to mobilise more students to join the ongoing protest.

At the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and University of Limpopo (UL) things seem to be normal as students are busy with the registrations.
