The South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) is a world renowned agricultural research institute conducting research for the sugar industry. There are a number of different research projects that take place at SASRI which are clustered into four multidisciplinary programmes, namely; Variety Improvement, Crop Protection, Crop Performance & Management and System Design and Optimisation. SASRI is currently looking for a graduate in the field of Entomology for 2022 intake.
The successful candidate will be working with the Entomologist within Crop Biology Resource Centre on a project to explore the potential of sterile insect technique when applied to improve the efficacy of Eldana management.
Purpose of the Graduate Programme:
- To provide workplace experience to graduates allowing them practical exposure that will enrich their academic training, enhancing future employability.
- To provide additional skills development training that will stimulate personal and professional growth, provide life skills and boost work readiness (Basic Business, Technical and Life Skills Training) through formal mentorship.
Essential Entry Requirements:
- South African candidate who have completed Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or Entomology within the last 3 years
- BSc Honours or 4-year degree in Entomology would be an advantage
- Candidate must be familiar with or interested in sterile insect technique and IPM
- Preference will be given to a candidate with a background in insect surveying and/or sorting
- Candidate must be able to work flexible hours – insect sample collection is unpredictable and often occurs after hours

- Should have an interest in working in an agricultural research environment
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- A team player that can self-motivate and work independently
- Goal oriented and career focussed
- Focussed, hardworking, flexible and can work independently
