The Witwatersrand University’s medical student Mumtaaz Emeran whose graduation was pending due her debts, got her R400 000 debt settled by South Africa’s good Samaritans within 24 hours.
Emeran received a letter from the institution, informing that she’s not going to graduate unless her debt is settled before the 9th of December, that’s when she took a video to Instagram, pleading with South Africans for a helping hand.
Emaran explained how the graduation might change her life and also highlighted how everything she worke hard for would go down the train.
She said she has found a placement, commencing on January 2021 but merely if her debt is settled. She expressed how the graduation would turn the lives of her loved ones.
“I finished my medical exam yesterday and I thought I’d be excited – over the moon, but then I got a message from my faculty stating that I will not graduate if I have historical debt, and if it’s not settled by the 9th, my name will get removed from the graduation list. If you know anyone or you are able to contribute anything, I’d really appreciate it,” she said as she’s using natural fillers.
Emaran said she had to dropout during her studies to get a job and settle her debt until she found a sponsor, sadly the sponsor couldn’t settle her previous debt, and yet another obstacle is encountered – the R400 000 owed to the institution shunning her from graduating. She explained how she conceived at 16 – the reason behind her going against all odds to give her son the best possible live ever.
“I got one-way ticket to Jo’burg and paid my way through med school until my third year, but in those three years I had to take a year off because I couldn’t pay my fees, so I had to work and eventually go back to school,” she said on the video.
Whilst myriads though SA doesn’t have good Samaritans, they were gobsmacked to learn that the young lady got her debt settled prior the deadline.
Among those who reached her on Tuesday, there’s a prominent businesswoman Carol Bouwer, former Miss SAs Bokang Montjane and Sasha Lee-Oliver – to offer a helping hand.
On Wednesday, the donors had contributed R215 000, and later that day, Emeran shared another video, it wasn’t a shocking one, she shared good news, making it clear that the target had been reached, her debt is settled, she’s going to graduate and she’ll commence with her housemanship in 2021.
“This degree is something that belongs to everyone of you and I want you to know that it’s because of every one of you that this was possible and I thank you so, s much,” she expressed her feelings of gratitude.
